Three candidates rejected from November ballot

NEWARK -- The members of the Licking County Board of Elections rejected three candidates for the November ballot based on problems with their petitions at their meeting Tuesday.

Melissa L. Vaubel, a candidate for the Lakewood Board of Education, was rejected because she did not have enough valid signatures on her petition, said Sue Penick, director of the board. Some of the people who signed Vaubel's petition were not registered voters, Penick said.

Laurie Montgomery, who was attempting to run for re-election to the board of the Licking County Educational Service Center, was rejected because she did not sign one of her petitions, making the signatures on that petition invalid.

Montgomery is an ESC board member and sits on the board of the Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County.

She was the only person running for the ESC board, which has two vacant seats. Penick said she is unsure what will happen to those two seats.

Doug A. Moore, a candidate for Mary Ann Township trustee, also was rejected because he did not sign one of his petitions, making the signatures on that petition invalid.

The three people will receive letters notifying them they were rejected from the ballot, Penick said.

"We do everything we can to make sure (candidates) make the ballot," Penick said. "Unfortunately, sometimes they just can't."

The remaining 169 candidates and 28 issues that filed for the November election last week were certified by the board at Tuesday's meeting, Penick said.
